Back Pain Symptoms & Diagnosis

Back Pain

A very common reasons for most of the office workers to visit their doctor or take time off from their work is Back pain. Surveys prove that 8 out of 10 people normally suffer from back pain.

It can be a dull constant pain, a sudden sharp pain which comes and goes, or a lasting chronic pain. Constant pain can last from days, to weeks, to even months.

There may be several potential causes for your back pain, but most of them are rare. Be sure to see a physiotherapist if you are experiencing regular back pain that does not go away in few days. After ruling out all the common causes for your back pain, your doctor will perform some tests to determine if you have a rarer cause. These can include:

• narrowing of the spinal canal, or spinal stenosis

• displacement of one vertebral body onto another, called degenerative spondylolisthesis

• loss of nerve function at the lower spinal cord, called cauda equina syndrome (a medical emergency)

• fungal or bacterial infection of the spine, such as Staphylococcus, E. coli, or tuberculosis

• cancer or non-malignant tumor in the spine

The symptoms of back pain include:

• a dull pain in the back

• stabbing intermittent pains

• lower back pain spreading to the legs

• stiff back

Diagnosis

By doing a simple physical examination, and by enquiring about patient’s medical history, a physician can diagnose back. Tests and scans are generally not required to diagnose back pain. However, if you are having chronic back pain, and if the physician suspects some underlying cause for the pain then he may prescribe some tests and scans such as:

• X-rays

• Bone Scans

• MRI or CT Scans

• Electromyography or EMG

• Blood Test
